The cornea is the front part of the sclera and is transparent. It not only allows the light to enter the eye through the pupil, but its curved surface also bends light so as to form a crude image on the retina. Any fine focusing needed is taken care of by small changes in the thickness of the lens, controlled by the ciliary muscles.
